One X-COM would be enough to call the 1994th major year for development of computer games. But at the beginning of spring of Origin and Looking Glass Studios let out System Shock — the game which rendered approximately same impact on the our industry as quitted ten years before William Gibson's "Neyromant" — on fantastic literature. Tendencies developed long ago: in secret (and it is equal also opened) laboratories brutal experiments on transposition of shooters and role-playing games were made, in Europe the modern genre of survival horror (horrors) gained strength, the success of Flashback and Syndicate set many developers thinking that the cyberpunk — it after all so steep...
The producer Warren Spector and the programmer Dag Church were bothered by the infinite vaults of Ultima Underworld meanwhile. On a joint of all these circumstances there was a game prototype which defined a way of development of FPS (and the industries generally) for the next fifteen years. Practically all finds of System Shock anyway got accustomed: neuroimplants with possibility of an upgrade; submission of a plot not through talks to NPC, and through e-mail and the found disks with information; executed in frame the 3D - the cyberspace which is smartly jointed with game "reality". NPC in game couldn't make because of technical restrictions, but System Shock still very not bad looks. It not completely three dimensional engine (three dimensional models are masterly combined with sprites), but at System Shock are already oblique surfaces, multi-level architecture, very interesting physics (the invisible model of the player is built there and in case of all relocation and contacts position of his head is calculated, for example) and permission to 640x480. Didn't become outdated also the general atmosphere of game at all (developers tried to build the hyper real world in which all objects seem volume and tangible, and they quite managed it!), and the extraordinary identity of a supercomputer of SHODAN — the far predecessor of GLaDOS...
Unfortunately, in March strongly cut down version of game on diskettes — without ozvucheniye and SVGA was issued. And in the fall when there was a full CD version, the world already of the rules Doom 2: Hell on Earth going unlike the game Looking Glass, exacting to resources, on any computer. In 1994 System Shock weren't played practically by anybody, and Spector still gnaws to himself elbows about it.
